The Mary Poppins Returns premiere was always going to be an interesting sartorial move to make. Would Emily Blunt, who plays the magical nanny herself, take a literal approach to red-carpet wear – à la Amber Heard at the Aquaman premiere this week? Would she go full-fashion, like Ezra Miller at the recent celebration for another fantastical franchise, Fantastic Beasts?
On November 29, as Blunt greeted Hollywood’s waiting paparazzi on the arm of her husband John Krasinski, the bets were off, and Blunt, wearing a Yanina Couture look that was positively bridal, managed to delight even those who were hoping for a carpet bag. No wonder Krasinski was beaming.
With voluminous sleeves, a deep V-neckline and sheer tulle lengths that fell to the floor, the gown was a nod to the fairytale franchise in the most delightful way. The choice of designer, meanwhile, was a refreshing antidote to the household names that play for a prominent position on the red carpet in the run-up to awards season. Founded by Yulia Yanina more than two decades ago, the brand takes inspiration from the romance of Russian poetry and Yanina’s own family heritage. Scroll through the @yaninafashion Instagram feed and the embellished confections on there make Blunt’s dress look modest in comparison.
Would the lean, buttoned-up suit and merry widow hat we associate with Poppins have been such a “wow” moment? That’s up for debate. But, a spoon full of couture certainly helps the cameras start flashing.
