With the awards season whirligig now well under way, one British star has broken from the pack. Gemma Chan, the Oxford-educated actress with a neat line in arched eye-brows and witty put-downs, is consistently pulling personal bests in the style stakes.
The Crazy Rich Asians star has played it relatively safe on the red carpet in recent months, choosing sleek, pared-back styles from Gabriela Hearst, Emilia Wickstead, Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu as her stock has steadily risen. 2019, however, has ushered in a new predilection for decidedly dramatic gowns.
Together with the British stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray, Chan has crafted a look that’s one-part bombshell, one-part butt-kicker. Take last week’s Golden Globes debut, where Chan was a shoo-in for best-dressed in navy Valentino Haute Couture. The fantasy gown boasted miles and miles of voluptuous full skirt and ensured shout-out status, but it also came with shorts and – whisper it – pockets.
The Critics’ Choice awards ensured another noteworthy outing in an exquisitely pretty gown custom-made by Jason Wu. The ballgown equivalent of a triple-shot latte – rich, mood-enhancing, with an extra kick – it was an accomplished take on modern romance. Meanwhile make-up artist Monika Blunder created a dewy beauty look and hair stylist Clariss Anya Rubenstein crafted a charming braid, secured with black grosgrain ribbon, to match the ribbon detail on the dress. The cherry on the top? Crazy Rich Asians took home the award for Best Comedy. Go behind-the-scenes with Chan as she details her prep plan.
